Rail passengers face Easter weekend disruption with the closure of Glasgow Central Station for engineering work.

All trains due to travel to and from the station on Saturday and Sunday will be replaced by bus services for all or part of the route.

Low-level Argyle line services travelling from Glasgow Central will not be affected.

The work is being carried out as part of an £85m investment to upgrade signals and engineering points.

Virgin Trains and GNER services will also be affected as a result of the engineering work at the station.

The work started in March when train journeys were also affected over a weekend, but with the warm weather set to continue over the bank holiday weekend, more people are expected to be disrupted this time.

David Simpson, Scottish route director of Network Rail, said the upgrades were essential to improve the reliability and performance of all trains using the station.

Mr Simpson added: "They will provide a welcome modernisation of the station infrastructure and improve the long-term performance of rail travel in Scotland.

"We have carefully planned this work over the past year, and our engineers will work round the clock to carry out these improvements."

Track renewal

Steve Montgomery, First ScotRail's operations and safety director, said: "These works will involve a high number of replacement buses and it will be a major exercise to manage passengers to and from their services.

"We are confident the planning on travel alterations will keep inconvenience to a minimum but clearly some journeys will take longer than normal and passengers should allow more time for travel."

Further engineering works will also affect low-level services to and from Queen Street station between Friday 6 and Tuesday 10 April.

The works will include track renewal on some stretches of line and maintenance work to an under-bridge near Airdrie.

Services between Edinburgh-Perth, Edinburgh-Dundee and Edinburgh-Inverness will be diverted from Saturday 7 until Monday 9 April because of work at Inverkeithing, with replacement buses running between Inverkeithing and Perth and Dundee.

Holidaymakers jetting off abroad for the Easter holidays have also been warned to prepare in advance for tighter security checks on hand luggage which were introduced last November.

Airport operators have urged passengers not to carry liquids and to remove any coats, jackets and laptops for security screening to prevent delays.
