Chief Superintendent Mark Hamilton said the violence in the early hours of Monday was "utterly wrong." Chief Superintendent Mark Hamilton said the officer who remained in hospital with the gunshot wound was not seriously injured.
"These officers were doing their jobs, were policing their local community and have been attacked whilst doing so," he added. "But clearly he is also trying to come to terms with the fact that someone tried to murder him last night," he said.
"Those involved in tonight's violence were intent on causing mayhem and destruction. Chief Superintendent Hamilton said that in both north and west Belfast members of the public and community representatives tried to help police stop the violence.
"We responded to this disorder immediately and officers put themselves in danger in order to restore normal and calm to the area for the residents who live there. No one wants a return to this type of behaviour. However, he said there were small elements "who seem hell-bent on wrecking their own communities".
Chief Supt Hamilton said he was very grateful to people in the community who "took personal risk" to try to prevent trouble and help then police. "What last night has shown is that disorder does nothing but damage local communities," he added.
He appealed to "anyone with influence" to exert it to make sure today's Twelfth of July events pass off without incident. "Today, we don't want to see any more communities damaged, any more cars hijacked, any more property damaged and any more police officers injured in the course of their duties."
