A security alert at Gilford in County Down has ended.

It has been declared an elaborate hoax. A number of houses had been evacuated during the alert.

Army bomb experts were sent to the scene. The Banbridge Road in the town was closed for a time but has now been reopened.

A suspicious object had been found near the village's police station after a telephone call warned that there was a bomb in the area.
