The quake struck some 300km (185 miles) south-west of Samoa, a small island chain between New Zealand and Hawaii. But it said a "destructive Pacific-wide tsunami" was not expected.
The centre said the tsunami may have damaged coastlines near to the epicentre of the earthquake. The quake struck some 300km (185 miles) south-west of Samoa. Waves of eight centimetres high were reported in the Samoan town of Pago Pago.
