Quite simply one of the most under-rated authors of his generation, along with John Sladek. Similar to Sladek, I believe he suffered from being branded a science fiction writer when his work cut across all genres. His wicked sense of humour will be sadly missed. I'd never encountered any writer so scathingly insightful yet full of compassion and hope Patrick, London, UK I read Slaughterhouse Five And Cat's Cradle as a teenager and remember the effect they had on me. While studying in the US during the late 1980s I worked as a waiter in the famous Garden Restaurant in Philadelphia. One evening, my attention was drawn to a freshly hatched dinosaur on table 11. I asked my fellow waiters if they thought they knew who he was. Blank stares. "Get some coffee to table five," someone shouted. The maitre d', a slightly better-informed person, took one look at table 11, smiled, and said: "It couldn't be, surely". I grabbed the coffee pot and that was the end of it, at least until 3am when my phone rang. Cheryl Cotton, our maitre d' was screaming at the other end. "It's him" she roared. (She had been filing the credit card slips.) I had never doubted the fact, but the story is interesting to me because, 20 years earlier, EVERY waiter would have recognised Vonnegut. He was a man without slogans or ideals, without icons or symbols, and without rhetoric and promises. He was a man of context. For me, the best writer of the 20th century, and Slaughterhouse 5 - a book from which Vonnegut relieved what is truly shocking (because real) by adding some funny science fiction - the best book of 20th century. So much compassion in that book. Mind you, that applies to everything he wrote. His death is a great loss to the literary world.Pamela Marqueyrol, Plaisir, FranceFor me, the best writer of the 20th century, and Slaughterhouse 5 - a book from which Vonnegut relieved what is truly shocking (because real) by adding some funny science fiction - the best book of 20th century. He was truly innovative, and a pleasure to study Claire Spencer, Birmingham, England Ever since I first picked up Cat's Cradle, I have respected Vonnegut for being able to convey the beautiful, the terrible and the complex - using exactly the words needed, and nothing more. A rare gem, in that he was a serious and profound writer who also managed to build a huge cult following. He's also rare and special in that (like JG Ballard) he persuaded me to read what could be described science fiction, a genre I usually have little time for. Planet Earth has lost one of its finest. Kurt Vonnegut was a man of colossal intelligence, humanity, wisdom and humour. No other writer has so perfectly elucidated the absurdities and joys of existence. If you haven't read any of his works, do so - share in the mind of one of the funniest and most truthful human beings who ever drew breath. He was an American sage and an incomparable genius. I read Slaughterhouse 5 in high school and it defined the way I look at literature and the world forever after. Kurt Vonnegut's work is eye-opening. After first reading Breakfast Of Champions around 1980 I've read all his books. My personal favourite is Cat's Cradle (1963) which deals brilliantly with science and the swindle of organised religion. It also introduces great new words and concepts that will live on in loving memory. M. Curtis, Copenhagen, DenmarkKurt Vonnegut's work is eye-opening. For Slaughterhouse-Five alone, Vonnegut would be worthy of entry to the pantheon of all time literary greats. I think Kurt Vonnegut definitely belongs among the greatest writers and thinkers of our time and having read most of his books in Finnish I found them mind-inspiring and sometimes comically ironic. I seem to have similar sense of humour. Player Piano is my favourite, picturing one kind of future, to which over-automatization and constant drive to raise productivity may lead to. I will always treasure Vonnegut's cynical contempt for the idiocy that has come to define the modern world. Its the only thing that keeps life from really being bizarre. He had the gift to make good, pointed literature fun and interesting Greg Wyss, Huntingdon, UK Kurt Vonnegut's death is yet another blow for the golden generation of American and world authors. He had the gift to make good, pointed literature fun and interesting; rather than a chore. While his more recent books may have lacked some of the impact of his earlier work they still made modern authors look like the self obsessed predictable lot that they are. This is a tremendous loss. I first started reading Vonnegut 25 years ago, when I was 15. In a way it's surprising that he lived as long as he did, given his addiction to a certain brand of cigarettes, whose manufacturers he said he would sue for not killing him! Without Kurt Vonnegut who is now left to redeem the United States? He was a conscience that country so badly needs.
