Two children were dragged from a car moments before it plunged more than 220ft (67m) down a cliff in Cornwall

It is believed the boys may have let the handbrake off the 4x4 vehicle at Polpeor Cove, on the Lizard.

The family, from Gloucester, were in Cornwall on holiday when the accident happened but police and rescue teams are still at the scene.

The mother freed the children, thought to be about five-years-old, before the car went over the cliff.

Recover possessions

A spokesman from Falmouth Coastguard told BBC News it was an "ongoing" situation, but the children were believed to be unhurt.

"The family was on holiday and now all their belongings are in the car at the bottom of the cliff," he said.

A boat is trying to reach the vehicle to recover as much of the family's possessions as possible.

"We think that might be easier than the cliff rescue team attempting to get the car back up the cliff," the coastguard spokesman added.

Highwater is expected at about 0030BST, when the vehicle will be completely submerged.
