Wal-Mart's healthier food plan backed by Michelle Obama

Retail giant Wal-Mart has unveiled plans to promote healthier, more affordable foods, in a move supported by US First Lady Michelle Obama.

The retailer plans to reduce sodium and added sugar in some items, and to lower prices on fruit and vegetables.

It also hopes to build stores in poor areas that do not already have grocery stores, known as "food deserts".

Mrs Obama, who has urged companies to make food healthier to combat child obesity, said she was "thrilled".

Mrs Obama joined Wal-Mart executives in Washington as the company unveiled its plans.

"I believe this charter is a huge victory for folks all across this country," she said.
