The attack, on a food market in the Sadriya area of the city, left scores of people injured. In the deadliest incident, some 115 people were killed in a car bombing in a food market in Sadriya district.
The blast was one of a series of bomb attacks which struck mainly Shia areas of the city, leaving at least 120 dead. An attack on a police checkpoint in Sadr City and several other explosions left at least another 42 people dead.

The worst attack happened in Sadriya, where police said more than 80 people were killed in a blast at a food market. A Reuters photographer at the scene reported seeing dozens of bodies, including women and children. The bomb in Shia-dominated Sadriya was reportedly left in a parked car and exploded at about 1600 (1200 GMT) in the middle of a crowd of workers.
Another 30 people were killed in a blast near a checkpoint in Sadr City, while 10 more died in a blast near a hospital in Karrada. The market was being rebuilt after it was destroyed by a bombing in February which killed more than 130 people.
"We lifted the dead," a man at the scene told the Associated Press news agency.
"One was totally unidentifiable, he had no ID. Actually his body was not even intact. We picked him up too."
About an hour earlier, a suicide car bomb attack on a police checkpoint in Sadr City killed 30 people.
Another parked car bomb killed at least 10 people near a hospital in the Karrada district of Baghdad, while in al-Shurja district at least two people were killed by a bomb left on a minibus.
