Differing perceptions of the Highland and Lowland Clearances are to be examined at a lecture in Sutherland.

Professor Tom Devine will explain to an audience in Dornoch how events in the north overshadowed those in the south.

The agricultural revolution of the late 18th and early 19th Centuries led to evictions from farms and crofts.

Mr Devine said while the Highland Clearances were well known the Lowland equivalent was not. The period drove many Scots into exile in North America.

The respected historian will deliver the UHI Millennium Institute 2006 Annual Lecture in Dornoch Cathedral late on Friday afternoon.

Meanwhile, Highlands and Islands Scottish National Party MSP Rob Gibson will be signing copies of his book The Highland Clearances Trail in Dornoch Bookshop from midday to 1300 BST.

He will later attend the clearances lecture.
