Homes in a mid Wales coastal town have been evacuated because of a leaking kerosene tanker.

About 300 gallons (1,150 litres) of heating oil spilled from the tanker in New Quay, Ceredigion after trouble with its coupling system.

Some oil is believed to have run into local water courses and reached the beach near the scene of the incident.

Several people in the town have been treated by paramedics after complaining of feeling unwell.

Firefighters from Mid and West Wales Fire Service spent hours trying to contain the oil spill.

The area was evacuated and a 50m (165ft) cordon set up around Picton Terrace.

Environment Agency staff, public health officers and the area's emergency planning officer are monitoring the effects of the spillage.

The clean-up operation will continue over the next two days, the Environment Agency said.

The agency said it was gathering evidence and would be considering enforcement action in line with its enforcement and prosecution policy.
