A Metropolitan Police statement said: "The officer injured is a male Pc based in the Croydon borough. Pc Albuery, who works with the Safer Neighbourhoods Team in West Thornton, was on a routine plain-clothes patrol with a colleague when he was attacked during the stop-and-search.
"He was on a proactive, plain-clothes patrol with colleagues in the area and had stopped a group of male teenagers in Bute Road when the suspect - one of the teenagers - stabbed him." The officer accompanying him was not injured.
London Mayor Boris Johnson said the incident was "deeply shocking and it reminds us of what an incredible job they do". Borough commander Adrian Roberts said: "Last night a working police officer was stabbed several times whilst in the line of duty.
"I and my officers are shocked and concerned that this has happened but are determined to continue to deliver a professional service to the community of Croydon borough.
"It is important to remember that this is an isolated incident.
"Local officers have been tasked with increased patrols in the area to reassure the public, and we have spoken with our partners so that the community can share their concerns."
