A dog has been photographed riding on the back of a motorbike in Cheltenham.

The picture was taken by creative designer Matt Hurley, 27, and posted on Twitter.

"I was stopped at the traffic lights and saw this dog come whizzing past on the back of a motorbike," he said.

"This could potentially lead to offences under section 40a of the Road Traffic Act and the Animal Welfare Act of 2006," said a spokesperson for Gloucestershire Police.

"As such we would discourage motorcyclists from carrying animals on their bikes in this way for the safety of the cyclist, the animal and other road users."

Mr Hurley added: "I was shocked really. I thought it was a bit cruel."
