The Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) is investigating the death of a man aged 42 after a police raid on his house in Port Talbot.

The IPCC said the man is believed to have swallowed something during the raid on the town's Sandfields estate.

His breathing then became laboured and officers called an ambulance, giving first aid before paramedics arrive.

The man was taken to hospital in Bridgend but died during early on Thursday, said the IPCC.

The man, whose name has not been released, was on a life support machine in the Princess of Wales Hospital's high dependency unit before he died.

IPCC Wales Commissioner Tom Davies said: "I would like to extend my sympathy to this man's family and friends.

"I have decided that the IPCC will conduct an independent investigation, which will establish the facts of what happened."

A post mortem examination was carried out on Friday by a Home Office pathologist.
