Plans for the introduction of a new curriculum for primary one pupils next September have been criticised by school principals.

The 'foundation stage' is part of the phased introduction of the 'revised curriculum'.

It will delay the teaching of formal reading and writing and emphasise more learning through play.

The curriculum proposals have been piloted among a number of schools in Northern Ireland.

However, principals whose schools were not involved said they were expected to introduce the curriculum without adequate staff training, resources or finance.
