Scottish Gas has announced that it is cutting its prices for the second time this year.

The company said its electricity tariffs would immediately fall by 5%, while its gas prices would drop by 3%.

The Centrica-owned firm said it had reduced its gas and electricity prices by 20% and 19% respectively in Scotland since the start of the year.

Scottish Gas estimated that the two cuts would mean annual savings of £223 for its customers north of the border.

Across the rest of the UK, British Gas is cutting its electricity prices by 6% and gas by 3%, with immediate effect.

Four other energy companies have cut their rates since the first reduction was announced in February.

Scottish Gas had raised its gas and electricity prices several times since 2002 as it passed on rising wholesale prices to customers.

The lowering of prices comes in response to the falling wholesale cost of energy.
