(about 1 hour later)
Durham University students have taken part in a question and answer session with Oscar-winning actor Russell Crowe. Russell Crowe described Durham as "gorgeous" when he attended the university to visit old friend Bill Bryson and meet the students.
The Gladiator and Robin Hood star was in the city to talk to members of Durham Student Theatre (DST). The Gladiator and Robin Hood star came to talk to members of Durham Student Theatre (DST) after tweeting about a deal he made with Mr Bryson.
DST president elect Sarah Peters said it was a "real accolade" to have the star visit. He said: "For me it was a point of honour. I said to Bill I was going do it and I wanted to fulfil that."
Crowe's appearance came about because of the actor's connections to US author Bill Bryson, who is chancellor of the university. DST president elect Sarah Peters said it was a "real accolade".
There are 800 members of DST but there is space for only 200 in The Assembly Rooms Theatre and so a ballot was held. Speaking to BBC Tees, Russell Crowe said: "We did a little vocal warm up, then I took them outside to do an exercise in leadership and using the space around you.
Ms Peters said the actor was due to show them one of his home-produced films and there would also be a question and answer session with him and Mr Bryson. "Durham's gorgeous, and they tell me the weather is like this all the time so I'll be bringing the wife back."
She said: "I think everybody is still a little speechless still." Bill Bryson, chancellor of the university, said: "It's just unbelievable.
The actor tweeted about the visit saying: "Durham is so beautiful, need sleep to be sharp for class in the morning." "It's the nicest thing anyone has ever done for me at least since my wife married me.
He also said he was "up for teaching drama" at Durham University before Mr Bryson steps down as chancellor by the end of the year. "He has found space in his life to do this, and not just to do it but to do it so well. It was an absolute inspiration to the students.
It prompted a formal invitation from the university. "He's given them 100% of his attention and all his energy. It was just fantastic"
