This is the first major crash involving Gol, which was founded in 2001. The travel editor of the Independent newspaper, Simon Calder, told BBC News 24 the plane had only been in service with the airline for 19 days.
He said the Boeing 737 had a "fantastic" safety record and only about 50 accidents had been reported despite the aircraft being produced for 40 years.
