Family and friends have gathered for the funeral of an elderly couple who were murdered at home in Wolverhampton.

Guiseppe Massaro, 80, and his wife Caterina, 77, were attacked with a hammer and a knife in Woden Road, Park Village, in April.

Three men were charged with murder and aggravated burglary.

A service was conducted in English and Italian at St Patrick's Church in Wednesfield Road. Family members then held a private burial for the couple.

Wojciech Ostolski, 32, and Macaej Kus, 30, of Wolverhampton, and Lieneusz Bartnowski, 21, of no fixed abode, are being held in custody over the deaths.

Mr and Mrs Massaro moved to England from Italy in 1960 and had two children and a number of grandchildren.

One of their granddaughters, Lindsey Booth, said: "It's been traumatic. Absolutely devastating.

"We just wanted to lay them to rest."

She said the couple's badly injured bodies were subject to a criminal investigation and had not been released to the family until now.

"It's just been the worst times of all of our lives," she added.
