Before anyone gets dewy-eyed about the "dear old smoking room", spare a thought for the non-smokers back in the office. We were the ones who were asked about 20 times a day to "just cover for me for 15 mins" while the ciggy-skivers toddled off to gossip, relax, network, plot, but above all NOT WORK for as long as they could drag it out for.Peter Marcus, ManchesterBefore anyone gets dewy-eyed about the "dear old smoking room", spare a thought for the non-smokers back in the office. If the Scottish ban is anything to go by, English pub visitors (and in fact it's the same for any type of public building) can expect to have to run the gauntlet of smokers surrounding the entrance, as most places don't have the scope to provide dedicated facilities beyond an ashtray and perhaps a parasol outside.Ian, Edinburgh, ScotlandIf the Scottish ban is anything to go by, English pub visitors (and in fact it's the same for any type of public building) can expect to have to run the gauntlet of smokers surrounding the entrance, as most places don't have the scope to provide dedicated facilities beyond an ashtray and perhaps a parasol outside.Ian, Edinburgh, Scotland

I found the comment in the article about smokers becoming more determined to continue to rebel interesting. I myself had planned to quit smoking last year when i changed jobs, fresh start and all that, but decided that if i did i might become one of those stats the government use to show how wonderful they are.David Smith, Glasgow, ScotlandI found the comment in the article about smokers becoming more determined to continue to rebel interesting. Many years ago my employer banned smoking in the building where I worked. There was no smoking room so us smokers were forced into the carpark behind the building. It only took one winter for me to realise that standing, freezing in the carpark for 20 minutes a day was a really silly way to behave, so I quit. Best thing I ever did, that was 12 years ago. When we went to Scotland there were little smoking areas outside pubs. It was great, you'd go out for a cig and make new friends, chat to all sorts of people you wouldn't have spoken to otherwise and you all feel bound together in Outcast Corner!Vicola, ManchesterWhen we went to Scotland there were little smoking areas outside pubs. I can see a return to the 70s type of house-party that we all went to before the advent of the disco, nightclub and raves. I think people will start to socialise more at home or at friends' houses to escape the complications of the smoking ban. I certainly believe it will enforce smoking rituals and I can see a new culture of smokers developing and the venues that have the best smoking facilities will have a distinct advantage over other businesses.amanda, bristolI can see a return to the 70s type of house-party that we all went to before the advent of the disco, nightclub and raves. I would particularly like to see office smoking rooms retained, maybe legislated to have adequate smoke extraction, but within the building. Why? Since many companies have already abandoned these rooms, it's almost impossible to walk past any office without being subject to clouds of smoke from the hordes of nicotine addicts gathered there. Let them stay inside and make things more pleasant for all of us.Mike Wright, London, UKI would particularly like to see office smoking rooms retained, maybe legislated to have adequate smoke extraction, but within the building.
