US 'kills senior Iraqi insurgent' US kills senior Iraqi insurgent
(about 3 hours later)
The US military says it has confirmed that a militant it killed this week was a key insurgent described as al-Qaeda in Iraq's "information minister". An Iraqi insurgent killed by the US this week was a key figure described by al-Qaeda in Iraq as its "information minister", the US military says.
Muharib Abdul Latif al-Jubouri died in an operation near Baghdad on Tuesday, said Maj Gen William Caldwell.Muharib Abdul Latif al-Jubouri died in an operation near Baghdad on Tuesday, said Maj Gen William Caldwell.
Jubouri had reportedly been involved in kidnapping a number of foreigners. His death may have been the source of Iraqi reports that al-Qaeda in Iraq's leader, Abu Ayyub al-Masri, had been killed, Gen Caldwell said.
But Gen Caldwell said he could not confirm Iraqi statements that other top militants, including the country's al-Qaeda head, had also died this week. Al-Qaeda in Iraq has confirmed the killing of Jubouri.
Identity mix-up
In an online statement, the so-called Islamic State of Iraq (ISI), an alliance of Sunni groups headed by al-Qaeda in Iraq, said its spokesman had been killed.
"We announce news of the martyrdom of the sheikh and fighter Abu Abdullah al-Jubouri," it said.
But it denied the killing of Abu Omar al-Baghdadi, the head of ISI.
The statement has not yet been independently verified.
Gen Caldwell said the US military had only killed one senior figure of the Iraqi insurgency this week - Jubouri.
He said this death may have led to confused reports earlier this week that Masri and Baghdadi had been killed.
Gen Caldwell said the US military did not have the bodies of Masri and Baghdadi and did not know "of anybody that does".

"When we can pick up someone like that who has that kind of history in being associated with the kidnapping and killing of foreign nationals in this country, that's significant," Gen Caldwell said, adding that the body had been identified through DNA tests."When we can pick up someone like that who has that kind of history in being associated with the kidnapping and killing of foreign nationals in this country, that's significant," Gen Caldwell said, adding that the body had been identified through DNA tests.
Earlier on Thursday, the Iraqi government said it had killed the leader of an insurgent coalition group affiliated with al-Qaeda, the so-called Islamic State of Iraq (ISI). Earlier on Thursday, Deputy Interior Minister Hussein Ali Kamal told AFP news agency that the Iraqi government had killed Baghdadi in western Baghdad.
