Archbishop Mario Conti said Nugent had abused trust and would not work in "active ministry" again. The Archdiocese of Glasgow repeated that apology on Tuesday and said it was unaware of further claims about the priest which were reported in the media over the weekend.
In a statement the church said: "The archdiocese fully respects and understands the court's decision. Fr Nugent must assume responsibility for the quality or otherwise of the evidence he gave to the court.
"In recent days new lurid details have emerged and new allegations have been made about Fr Nugent's past, details of which we had no prior knowledge and allegations about which we have no evidence."
