Eight of the pupils were ferried to hospital in an ambulance, while emergency services commandeered a second coach with a paramedic on board to take the remaining pupils to hospital in Grimsby. The East Midlands Ambulance Service took the affected youngsters by coach to the Diana Princess of Wales Hospital in Grimsby.
Four other emergency ambulances were used in the transfer. "The injuries that I've been made aware of were only minor so I should imagine it was shortness of breath, possibly watering of the eyes and some blockage of the nasal passages," said Phil Morris, from the ambulance service.
Police are working with the coach company to investigate the circumstances of the incident. "But luckily very minor injuries and obviously that's very pleasing given the circumstances."
Lincolnshire County Council confirmed it was also investigating and a health and safety officer from East Lindsey District council was travelling to the school. Police officers are working with the coach company to investigate the circumstances of the incident.
The school said it was notifying parents about the incident. Lincolnshire County Council said it had been informed by Stage Coach, which operates the school bus, that the vehicle concerned had now been traced.
The council said a full and thorough investigation would take place into the incident.
