Arson charge after blaze at bar Man remanded on pub arson charge
(1 day later)
A man has been charged with arson endangering life after a fire at a County Down bar and restaurant. A Craigavon man has been remanded in custody charged with arson with intent to endanger life following a blaze at a County Down bar and restaurant.
Fifteen people escaped from the Plough Bar in Hillsborough when a smoke alarm went off at 0130 BST on Saturday. Craig Woodcroft, 20, with an address at Bramley Apple Pottery, is accused of setting fire to the Plough Bar and Restaurant in Hillsborough.
It took 50 firefighters two-and-a-half hours to bring the blaze under control. The premises were severely damaged. Fifteen staff escaped from the premises when fire took hold on Saturday.
Police said the 20-year-old accused had been charged with a number of offences including arson and would appear at Lisburn Magistrates' Court on Monday. It is thought repairs could cost up to £1.5m, as part of the bar was extensively damaged.
Fire officer Martin McDonald said the roof had collapsed in part of the building and the lower floors of the bar and restaurant had suffered smoke damage. Mr Woodcroft is also charged with breaking into and burgling the property, tampering with a vehicle, burning a bin belonging to Lisburn Borough Council and destroying a heating tank.
A police officer told Lisburn Magistrate's Court she believed she could connect Mr Woodcroft to the charges.
