Fidel Castro says the worst of his health crisis is now behind him and he is on the road to recovery, despite losing more than 18kg (40lb) in weight.

In his statement, published on the state news website, Mr Castro said "the most critical moment" was behind him.

Cuba's leader temporarily ceded power to his brother on 31 July after undergoing intestinal surgery.

His statement was published along with images of the Cuban leader reading in a rocking chair by a window.

"One can say that the most critical moment is behind us. Today, I am recovering at a satisfactory pace," the 80-year-old writes in his message.

Mr Castro says he expects to have several meetings with foreign dignitaries in the next few days, a reference to the forthcoming summit of the Non-aligned Movement, due to be held in Havana next week.

"That doesn't mean that every activity [of mine] will be immediately covered by film and photos, although news coverage will always be provided," he writes.

Images of a frail Mr Castro were released on his birthday, on 13 August, in an attempt to quell rumours that he had died. More recently, video images were broadcast showing Mr Castro, in his hospital bed and wearing pyjamas, greeting visiting Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez.
