Israeli soldiers have killed two Hamas militants in a gun battle that broke out during an Israeli military raid into Gaza. About 50 Palestinians in Gaza, mostly militants, have been killed in nearly two weeks of Israeli air strikes aimed at stopping rocket attacks on Israel. Palestinian militants have fired more than 230 rockets into Israel in the last two weeks, killing two Israelis. Separately, Israel arrested a Fatah member of parliament in the West Bank. Hamas said the gun battle took place near the Sufa border crossing in southern Gaza. Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert has promised to continue a crackdown against Hamas. Hamas has said its attacks will not stop. The Fatah MP who was arrested, Jamal Tirawi, was detained with four bodyguards in the West Bank town of Nablus, Palestinian officials said. Mr Tirawi is the Fatah spokesman in the Palestinian parliament and a high-ranking member of the al-Aqsa Martyrs' Brigade, an armed group linked to Fatah. Israel has detained more than 30 Hamas officials in the West Bank in the last week, including two cabinet ministers. |
