The leak of waste solvent happened on the carriageway near junction 31 at about 10:00 GMT on Tuesday. The spillage happened on the northbound carriageway near junction 31 at Preston at about 10:20 GMT on Tuesday.
The driver was taken to hospital after inhaling fumes from the substance which cascaded for several hundred metres across the lanes. Waste solvent cascaded for several hundred metres across the carriageway as the tanker drove uphill.
All four northbound lanes have reopened to traffic following resurfacing work. All four lanes were closed for several hours and two remained closed overnight while the road was resurfaced.

Police said the driver of the tanker was taken to hospital after inhaling fumes from the substance.
A second incident happened on the M6 southbound later on Tuesday, when a motorcyclist collided with at least two other vehicles.
Lancashire Police said the accident happened at junction 30 at about 17:00 GMT.
The motorway was closed for an hour while emergency services attended.
Earlier in the day, a 41-year-old motorcyclist from Burnley was killed when his bike and a car collided near the M6 and M65 interchange.
