A child has been killed in a hit-and-run incident in Edinburgh. A young girl has been killed and a woman seriously injured in a hit-and-run collision in Edinburgh.
It is understood that a four-wheel-drive hit a mother and her toddler on Redford Drive in the city at about 1530 BST. The incident happened in the Colinton area of the city at about 1530 BST and the child died at the scene. The woman was taken to Edinburgh Royal Infirmary.
The child was pronounced dead at the scene while the woman was taken to hospital. The extent of her injuries was not known. Eyewitnesses said a green Cherokee Jeep had been involved in two collisions with other vehicles shortly before the fatal accident.
BBC Scotland understands that one person has been detained by police in connection with the incident. One man has been detained and a search has been launched for a second.
Officers were believed to be looking for a further person. The woman and child were thought to have been hit in Westgarth Avenue.
Police have appealed to anyone who witnessed the incident to contact them. The accident has led to serious traffic disruption in the area.
The road has been closed while officers examine the scene.
