St Paul's protest: Seven charged over Guildhall protest St Paul's protest: Corporation to resume legal action over camp
(about 2 hours later)
Seven people have been charged after a protest by activists at the Lord Mayor's Banquet at London's Guildhall. Legal action to clear the protest camp outside St Paul's Cathedral will resume after talks between the City of London Corporation and activists broke down.
About 30 protesters from the Occupy London Stock Exchange (OLSX) group gathered outside the Guildhall on Monday night where the new Lord Mayor David Wooton held the annual event. Members of the Occupy London Stock Exchange (OLSX) group have been outside the cathedral since 15 October.
The arrests came as the OLSX camp set up outside St Paul's Cathedral marked a month of "occupation". OLSX activists plan to gather outside the US Embassy at 15:00 GMT in "solidarity" with campers evicted from a protest in New York's Wall Street.
The activists say they are protesting against inequality and corporate greed. Earlier this month, the corporation dropped its plans take legal action.
The Dean of St Paul's Cathedral, along with two other senior members of the cathedral's management, resigned following the establishment of the camp. Seven people were charged with a number of offences after a protest at the Lord Mayor's Banquet, on Monday night.
Activists 'kettled' About 30 protesters from OLSX gathered outside London's Guildhall where the new Lord Mayor of the City of London, David Wootton, held the annual event.
Earlier this month, the Corporation of London also abandoned its plans to take legal action to try to force the 200 or so protesters to leave. Marking its one-month anniversary at the camp, OLSX said it had received £23,000 in cash donations.
The OLSX said Monday night's demonstration outside the banquet, which was attended by Prime Minister David Cameron, was a "peaceful action aimed to highlight the extreme concentration of wealth and power represented at the Guildhall's flagship event".
The group claimed its activists had been "kettled" by police officers, but the City of London Police denied the allegations saying "protesters were free to leave".
Police said five people were charged with breaching the Public Order Act, one man was charged with indecent behaviour at a police station and another man was accused of assaulting a police officer.
All seven were bailed and will appear at City of London Magistrates' Court on 22 November.
