Liam's death marks the first murder on the Western Isles in 43 years.
The last murder inquiry was launched in 2006 after Murdo MacDonald, 56, was beaten by three men in Stornoway and later died from his injuries.
In October 2007, Paul Simmonds, 33, and George Macaulay, 28, were both jailed for three years and nine months and Rory Macleod, 19, to one year and 10 months.
They had originally been accused of murdering Mr MacDonald, before the charge was reduced to serious assault.
