Two hundred and fifty jobs will be lost as a Coventry hospital struggles to balance its books.

The University Hospital, which closed two operating theatres last year, has to find £15m in one year to pay its way.

It said it will be looking to "do things more efficiently".

Charlie Sarell, from Unison, said the news comes "as no surprise" and the union was "very concerned" about the jobs situation.

He said: "We've been watching the situation at the trust with great concern.

"This reduction, if coming out of clinical services, will have a direct impact on health care to the people of Coventry and Warwickshire."

Finance director Andy Harding said: "We are looking at using the new hospital and all the facilities we've got, both in terms of equipment, medical equipment and diagnostic equipment, to do things more efficiently.

"(We are) looking at where care is most appropriately given, whether that be actually in the hospital or outside of the hospital."
