A83 Rest and Be Thankful road fully reopens A83 Rest and Be Thankful road closed again at night
(about 7 hours later)
The A83 in Argyll has reopened fully after a landslide at the Rest and Be Thankful. High winds have frustrated hopes of reopening the A83 in Argyll in darkness hours, following an earlier landslip.
The road was closed on 1 December after about 100 tonnes of the hillside slipped, with some debris falling onto the carriageway. The poor weather meant it was not possible to install floodlights to assist the monitoring of the route at the Rest and Be Thankful.
The route was opened during daylight hours three days later but drivers faced a long diversion at night. The road reopened during daylight hours on 3 December, after work to clear debris that fell down the hillside.
Transport Scotland warned the road may be closed again if monitoring showed an increased landslide risk. Transport Scotland said it hoped the road would open again fully at 08:30 on Wednesday.
The agency thanked motorists for their patience as work continued to ensure the road was safe. A spokeswoman said the high winds and driving rain had forced it to close the road to all but emergency vehicles.
Head of road maintenance Graham Edmond said: "There remains a risk from landslides at the site but with additional measures to ensure the safer running of traffic during the hours of darkness, we are now in a position to reopen the road 24 hours a day to all traffic." A lengthy diversion was in place, directing traffic on to the A819 and A85/A82.
Quick response She said: "The lighting would allow our team on the ground to monitor the road during darkness and provide an additional layer of comfort to make the road as safe as possible.
Floodlighting has been put in place and the road will be staffed to ensure a quick response to any emergencies that arise. "We can only apologise once again to the local communities affected. We do appreciate the need for them to go about their business, but the decision has not been taken lightly.
Additional monitoring equipment was expected to be in place before Christmas. "As we have said in recent days - safety is paramount in everything we do and our key focus is always be to ensure the safety of road users."
This will give an early visual indication of any movement of the hillside and increase the agency's ability to monitor the situation during the hours of darkness. The agency remained hopeful the road would be open during darkness from Wednesday evening.
