At the height of the fire, buildings near the four-storey hotel had to be evacuated and a number of residents were moved to safety. Nearby buildings were evacuated and Torquay seafront closed after part of the four-storey hotel collapsed.
Part of the hotel has collapsed and Devon and Cornwall Police have closed Torquay seafront. No-one was hurt. Meanwhile, crews from north Devon are currently dealing with a big fire at the derelict four-storey Southcliffe Hotel in Ilfracombe.
A police spokeswoman said the closure was a precautionary measure in case the rear of the hotel collapsed down the cliff side onto the main road. Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service said the alarm was raised just before 06:30 GMT.
The cause of the fire is not yet known, but an investigation will begin later. Appliances have been sent from Ilfracombe, Barnstaple, Combe Martin, Lynton and Woolacombe, including an aerial ladder platform from Barnstaple.
There are no reports of any injuries.
