Sentence for Michael Dye's Wembley death criticised Michael Dye Wembley death: My world crushed, says widow
(about 6 hours later)
A family friend of Wales fan Michael Dye has criticised the three-year jail term for his killer. The widow of a Wales football fan killed outside Wembley stadium says her world has been "crushed" by the death.
Ian Mytton, 41, of Worcestershire, was sentenced after admitting manslaughter before September's England-Wales Euro 2012 qualifier. Ian Mytton, of Worcestershire, was jailed for three years after admitting Michael Dye's manslaughter before September's England-Wales game.
Mr Dye, 44, who was also a Cardiff City fan fan, suffered a fractured skull after a punch described at the Old Bailey as "sickening". In a statement to the court before sentencing, Nathalie Dye said: "Part of me died alongside Mike".
Friend Gwyn Davies said he was disillusioned by the sentence. After the case a friend of the 44-year-old Cardiff City supporter criticised the length of the sentence.
"I am totally disillusioned - I am not surprised but I am disillusioned," said Mr Davies. Mr Dye, of Ely, Cardiff, was struck a single "sickening" punch shortly before the kick-off of the Euro 2012 qualifier.
"The family must be absolutely heartbroken - justice hasn't been done, has it? He suffered a fractured skull and died later in hospital.
"It is so inconsistent. Three years for taking a life with a recommendation that the lad serves 18 months. This time next year, he'll most likely be out." Mytton, 41, of Worcestershire, admitted landing the fatal blow, and was told he must serve at least 18 months of the sentence.
Mytton, 41, from Redditch in Worcestershire, pleaded guilty at the Old Bailey via video link last month. His widow said: "The man who caused Mike's death might as well have killed me that night.
In a statement read in court, the victim's wife Nathalie Dye said: "The man who caused Mike's death might as well have killed me that night.
"Part of me died alongside Mike.
"The only thing to look forward to is being with my darling husband once again.""The only thing to look forward to is being with my darling husband once again."
'Living hell' 'Role model'
She added: "Since I lost my wonderful husband my world has been crushed. It has been a living hell." Mrs Dye told the court in an impact statement on Wednesday: "Since I lost my wonderful husband my world has been crushed. It has been a living hell.
Mr Dye, a father-of-three, was found injured outside Wembley's Gate C before the match. "I am unable to eat for fear of having a moment of enjoyment without my husband."
CCTV footage showed Mytton approaching Mr Dye on a concourse outside the stadium and punching him once at 19:20 BST - about 25 minutes before kick-off - and walking away. "I suffer from anxiety attacks and I have had to move house," she said, describing her husband as "the ideal hero and role model" to his three children.
Prosecutor Phillip Bennetts said one eyewitness described the punch as sickening. After the court hearing, family friend Gwyn Davies said he was unhappy with the sentencing.
Mr Dye was taken to Northwick Park Hospital in north-west London with blunt force trauma to the back of his head, but died a short time later. "I am totally disillusioned - I am not surprised but I am disillusioned," he said.
Sentencing Mytton, Judge Anthony Morris said: "As you said in your letter to me - 'the two people, Michael Dye and myself were just going to a football match, for one of us to lose his life and for one of us to end up in prison is heartbreaking' - and I would agree with that." "The family must be absolutely heartbroken - justice hasn't been done, has it?
Mytton was also banned from attending football matches for six years. "It is so inconsistent.
"Three years for taking a life with a recommendation that the lad serves 18 months. This time next year, he'll most likely be out."
