Cambridgeshire Police said a 17-year-old boy had been arrested and was being held in custody. Det Supt Jeff Hill said Mr Thomas could have died in a burglary which went wrong and he appealed for information.
He was arrested on Friday afternoon and was due to be questioned at Parkside police station in Cambridge. Mr Thomas was born on the outskirts of Cardiff and farmed in the Bridgend area before moving to Cambridgeshire 12 years ago.
Det Supt Jeff Hill said one line of inquiry was that Mr Thomas died in a burglary which went wrong on 17 December.
