The railway line between Londonderry and Belfast has been described as "third world" after it buckled in heat at the weekend.

SDLP MLA John Dallat has criticised the Department for Regional Development's lack of investment in the line.

"It seems that there's a mindset that they just won't recognise it as part of their network," he said.

Translink's Ciaran Rogan said the buckling near Ballymena reflected a need for investment.

"It wasn't happening in the other parts of our network where we have done complete relays and have spent money to maintain the services," he said.

A number of trains were cancelled as a result of the track malfunction and a bus substitution service put in place.
