An MP's elderly mother was burgled by a teenager who had committed almost 1,400 other crimes undetected, he told MPs.

David Amess, Tory MP for Southend West, said the man who burgled his 95-year-old mother asked the court to take into account 1,396 other offences.

He asked ministers whether they thought the man was "the cleverest thief that ever existed" or if it was "a disgrace" the crimes had gone undetected.

Minister Vernon Coaker said he was committed to prosecuting criminals.
