Salmon catch shows recovery signs

Catches of salmon on Scotland's rivers last year were the fifth highest on record, according to new figures.

A Scottish Executive report has indicated that stocks are recovering after years of decline, with more than 80,000 salmon caught last year.

Experts said stocks were stable or recovering due to catch and release policies and river improvements.

However, Deputy Environment Minister Rhona Brankin remained concerned that so many salmon were still dying at sea.

She said scientists were trying to understand what was going on.
