Man's 'suspicious' death probed William McKeeney killed on way home in Pollokshields
(about 7 hours later)
A 57-year-old man has died after a disturbance in the south side of Glasgow in the early hours. A 57-year-old man has died after a "completely unprovoked and violent attack" by two men on his way home from a night out in the south of Glasgow.
The man was taken to the Victoria Infirmary following the incident in Pollokshields but died soon after. William McKeeney was attacked on Melville Street in Pollokshields - just a few yards from his home in the same street - at about 00:40.
Police said they were currently treating the death as "suspicious". He was taken by ambulance to the Victoria Infirmary but died a short time later.
Officers have cordoned off Melville Street while they carry out a search of the scene. The two men were described as being of Asian appearance.
The first was about 6ft 4in, of thin build, and wearing a light coloured 'hoodie' and light grey tracksuit bottoms.
The second was said to be of average height and build, wearing a navy tracksuit.
Police said they were treating the death as murder.
Det Ch Insp David Gailey said: "Mr McKeeney had been out locally socialising in the Pollokshaws Road and Nithsdale Road areas and was making his way home when the attack took place.
"He was found a short distance from his home."
He added: "At the moment it would appear that it was a completely unprovoked and violent attack. I do not know at this time if he met the two men responsible on his way home or close to his house.
"The natural route home for William, who was well known in the area, would have been via Darnley Street, so I would appeal to anyone who saw him during the night to contact us".
"Melville Street and the surrounding area of Pollokshields are residential, so there is the possibility that someone heard or saw something that will help us catch those responsible for this vicious murder."
