'Aircraft incident' alert near Welshpool Welshpool air crash: two die as light aircraft comes down

Dyfed-Powys Police are dealing with an "aircraft incident" in a village near Welshpool. Two people have died after a light aircraft crashed in mid Wales.
Police said the alarm was raised in Leighton at 12:00 GMT on Wednesday. The Wales Air Ambulance service confirmed the deaths after it was called to Leighton, near Welshpool, at 12:44 GMT on Wednesday.
Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service said three fire engines had been sent to the scene. Mid Wales Airport, near Welshpool, would not comment on the crash but has closed for the day following the incident.
No further details were available at the present time. The Air Accident Investigation Branch (AAIB) has confirmed it is investigating the incident.
Dyfed-Powys Police said a small aircraft was involved, and Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service sent three fire engines to the scene.
A fire service spokesperson said: "Emergency services have been dealing with an incident involving a small aircraft which has come down in the Leighton area of Welshpool.
"Two appliances from Welshpool, one appliance from Llanfair Caereinion, and a Land Rover pump from Llanfyllin have attended the incident.
"Two breathing apparatus sets have been in use, and a low pressure hose reel jet."
