Younis rejects Pakistan captaincy Yousuf takes Pakistan captaincy
(about 3 hours later)
Batsman Younis Khan has turned down the chance to captain Pakistan at the ICC Champions Trophy in India. Mohammad Yousuf will captain Pakistan in the Champions Trophy after Younis Khan ruled himself out of contention.
Younis, the team's vice-captain, was chosen to replace Inzamam-ul-Haq, who is serving a four-match ban for his part in the forfeited Oval Test. Younis was expected to deputise for Inzamam-ul-Haq who has been banned for four games, but told a news conference he refused to be a "dummy captain."
He should have held a full news conference with coach Bob Woolmer but instead he said one sentence and left. His actions were condemned by Pakistan officials but he will continue as player for the tournament.
Younis said: "I don't want to be a dummy captain and the reason why I have refused will be revealed afterwards." All-rounder Abdul Razzaq will be the vice-captain for the event, which begins in India on Saturday.
Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) director of operations Saleem Altaf said the 28-year-old had not given a reason and was critical of the batsman. Pakistan officials reacted angrily to the decision by Younis.
"We don't think this is the way to do things," he said. "If he had anyproblems he should have discussed it with us first. "We don't think this is the way to do things," said PCB director of operations Saleem Altaf . "If he had any problems he should have discussed it with us first.
Altaf, who added that Mohammad Yousuf would now be the likely captain for the tournament, said Younis was not likely to lose his place but warned: "We will talk to Younis about his behaviour." "We will talk to Younis about his behaviour."
