Mrs Merritt's husband, Peter, had become concerned when his wife missed appointments and he found her car outside Mrs Hale's flat.

Mrs Merritt was her care worker who visited twice a week to help bathe her. Winchester Crown Court was told Tiley lived with Mrs Hale's body in the flat they shared for more than a week after he killed her by stabbing her four times.
Nick Hawkins, prosecuting, said Tiley told police in interview that he killed Mrs Hale after an argument on 7 March during which she "taunted" him about something in his past.

After the killing, Tiley - who had previously served a prison sentence for rape offences - carried on with his normal life in order to "show his face", including going to the bookmakers to place bets.
Eight days after Tiley killed Mrs Hale, her carer Mrs Merritt attended the flat for a regular appointment in which she normally helped her to bathe.
Tiley tied her up and took her cash card to withdraw £150 from a nearby supermarket cashpoint.
He later returned to rape her and stab her twice.
The court was told that Tiley then withdrew another £100 from a cashpoint before catching a train to Weymouth, Dorset, where he booked into a bed and breakfast.
