A spokeswoman said the investigation into the image was in its early stages. Match Commander Ch Supt Jon Ward said: "This matter is now under investigation by specialist hate crime detectives and we are working with Liverpool Football Club to identify the man in question."
Before the game, Ch Supt Jon Ward had said "any inappropriate remarks and behaviour will be acted upon". Officers have released a picture of a man in connection with the incident.
