Three people, two women and a man, have died in an accident on the A38 in Plymouth, Devon. Three people have been killed in an accident on the A38 in Plymouth after reports a car was seen driving the wrong way along the carriageway.
The emergency services were called to the eastbound carriageway outside the Lyneham Inn just before midnight and the carriageway remains closed. The two-vehicle accident happened just before midnight on the A38 near Lyneham, Plympton. The carriageway has been partially reopened.
One car was reported to have been seen driving the wrong way down the road. Police said evidence pointed to a car, driven by a woman, being on the wrong side of the road for a couple of miles.
A diversion was in place for eastbound traffic, leaving the A38 at Deeplane End. Those involved in the crash have not yet been named. She and the couple in the other car were local to the region police said.
Police said evidence pointed to a Daewoo, driven by a middle-aged woman, being on the wrong side of the road for a couple of miles. "Three persons were pronounced dead at the scene," said a police spokesman.
She and the elderly couple in the Skoda were local to Devon and Cornwall, said a spokesman. "Immediately prior to this road traffic collision, a report had been received of a vehicle travelling the wrong way along the A38," he said.
Collision investigators were called to the scene, and officers have appealed for witnesses.
