Captain Nurur Rahman, of Papua New Guinea's National Maritime Safety Authority, told the BBC that he had reports of people floating in life jackets where the boat sank. The Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA), which is assisting PNG's National Maritime Safety Authority, has confirmed that the vessel sank approximately 16km (9.9 miles) off Finschhafen.
In a statement, AMSA said four of the ships on scene were recovering survivors. It said its Dornier aircraft, which has multiple life rafts on board to drop to survivors, was also on the scene.
