The 18th Century Calke Abbey near Ticknall, south Derbyshire and the surrounding park, were hit by heavy rain on Friday. Experts and volunteers are assessing the extent of the damage. Samantha Chidlow from the National Trust, who own the abbey, said everything was being done to make the buildings and land safe. "Following yesterday's storm which caused flooding in the general vicinity of the property, we have taken the decision to close for the safety of visitors and our staff," said Ms Chidlow. "The closure will also enable the property team to check the house and gardens for damage." The stately home was built by the Harpe-Crewe family in 1704, on the site of an earlier priory. It was donated to the National Trust in 1986. |
