Emergency services dealt with a chemical scare on a beach following the discovery of two suspect canisters in North Berwick.

Firefighters were called to West Beach in the East Lothian town after a member of the public reported a noxious smell was coming from them on Sunday morning.

A chemicals expert from Lothian and Borders Police later confirmed both barrels contained just engine oil.

Part of the beach was cordoned off while the operation took place.

A coastguard spokesman said they followed appropriate safety measures in light of the reports of noxious fumes.

"We thought it prudent to have Lothian and Borders Fire Brigade examine them properly in accordance with proper procedure."
