UK unemployment is down again with the number of unemployed reaching 2.51m, down 128,000 on last year. UK unemployment is down again with the number of unemployed at 2.49m, down 37,000 from June to August 2012.

Growth of 65,000 in private sector employment was responsible for the increase in jobs, with the public sector pay roll shrinking by 24,000 to 5.7m its lowest level in a decade. The ONS said there were more private sector jobs in the economy 23.8m than ever before. The figure, giving an employment rate of 71%, is the highest since records began in 1971.

The jobless total stood at 2.51m for August to October 2012, dropping by 82,000 from May to July 2012. The UK unemployment rate for August to October 2012 stood at 7.8%, down 0.5% from the previous year. This is the lowest rate since March to May 2011, but still considerably higher than the lows of 4.7% seen in late 2004 and early 2005. The jobless total stood at 2.49m for September to November 2012, dropping by 37,000 from June to August 2012. The UK unemployment rate in the three months to November was 7.7%, down 0.7% from the previous year. This is the lowest rate since March to May 2011, but still considerably higher than the lows of 4.7% seen in late 2004 and early 2005.

Unemployment among the under-25s has stayed below 1m falling by 472,000 from the May to July figure. The jobless rate among 16 to 24-year-olds is now 20.3%, down 1.3 percentage points from May to July. Unemployment among the under-25s has stayed below 1m but today's release shows the figure to be up 1,000 from June to August. The jobless rate among 16 to 24-year-olds was 20.5% for September to November 2012, unchanged from June to August.
