(40 minutes later)
Adele and Ed Sheeran are among the music stars who are hoping for glory at the Brit Awards ceremony, which is taking place at the O2 Arena in London. Adele has been named best British female at this year's Brit Awards ceremony at the O2 Arena in London.
Sheeran leads the field with four nominations - best male, breakthrough act, best single and best album. The Brits recognition follows a year of success for her second album 21.
Adele, whose performance at last year's ceremony was the catalyst for her huge global success, is up for three prizes. But former X Factor boy band One Direction beat her to the award for best British single.
The London singer is favourite to win best British female and best British album for 21, her second record. In other awards, Ed Sheeran was named best British male and Coldplay won best British group. US pop star Bruno Mars was named best international male and Rihanna won best international female.
She is also in the running for best British single and will sing Rolling at the Deep at this year's event in what is only her second live performance since having throat surgery last year. Adele beat Jessie J, Florence & The Machine, Kate Bush and last year's winner Laura Marling in the best British female category.
Accepting the trophy, she said: "It's been an amazing year. Thank you. I'd like to thank my record company for letting me be the kind of artist I want to be."
comes a week after the singer, whose second album 21 has enjoyed huge global success, won six Grammys in Los Angeles.
The Londoner has become one of the world's most popular singers after her album 21 sold 12.5 million copies around the world and was number one in 24 countries last year.
Later in the ceremony, she will sing Rolling at the Deep - only her second live performance since throat surgery last year.
Ed Sheeran went into the ceremony with four nominations - best male, breakthrough act, best single and best album.
Speaking on the red carpet, Sheeran said he was glad to be up against Adele in only two of his four categories. US singer Aloe Blacc, who is nominated for best international male alongside Bon Iver, Bruno Mars, David Guetta and Ryan Adams, said soul music was going through a purple patch.
"Adele is doing well, I'm doing well, Bruno Mars is doing well. It really feels like music is being honoured in a special way with these nominations.
"Adele has been a very refreshing break from all of the very hyper, celebratory dance music. Sometimes you just want a song that can comfort you when you're sad."
Other stars on the red carpet included Kylie Minogue, who said: "The Brits are a moment for the industry to take stock, see what works and perhaps what didn't work, and to celebrate success."
Singer-songwriter Anna Calvi, who is up for the British breakthrough award alongside Sheeran, Emeli Sande, Jessie J, The Vaccines, said her nomination showed growing respect for left-field musicians.
Calvi, who is signed to the independent Domino label, said: "I think it's recognising the way that music's going. There's more diverse music that's coming to the fore and that's a great thing."
