Colombian police have arrested a suspected drug baron who went missing in Mexico two years ago.

Otto Roberto Herrera Garcia, a Guatemalan national, was awaiting extradition to the US when he escaped from a prison in Mexico City in 2005.

He was recaptured by Colombian police at a flat in the capital, Bogota.

US officials had called him one of the most-wanted drug traffickers in the world and offered a $2m (£1m) reward for information leading to his capture.

"This shows Colombia is not, and will not, be a refuge for criminals," Colombian intelligence chief Andres Penate said.

Until his 2004 arrest in Mexico, Mr Herrera Garcia was accused of moving tons of cocaine into the US.

He is believed to have bribed his way out of prison two years later.
