Mr McKinnon has two brothers who are serving judges, Stuart, a High Court Judge and Warwick, a Circuit Judge and their father was also a judge - His Honour Neil McKinnon QC. Mr McKinnon was appointed as a Circuit Judge in 1998, having originally been called to the Bar in 1967.
